What to Do?

How does one keep the breath in mind, keep the practice in mind in the midst of a life chocked full of busyness, desperation and anxiety? What to do when even the cold shadow of Death cannot break through the veil of delusion? What to do when Wisdom abandons you and all that you are left with are the playthings of Mara?

Practice, practice, practice…do you have an established breath practice? Or have you attended yoga asana classes, or do you have your own asana practice? Asana gives us a chance to practice breathing in challenging postures on our mat, to breath around the mind’s chatter, the intensity of emotion, the work in the body. If we can establish a rhythmic breath there, then eventually we can take it with us outside of our yoga asana practice. I have found ujayi pranayam to be particularly effective when I’m feeling impatient, speeded up, irritated. If I can remember to slow my breath down, then I can begin to relax and be present to whatever is. How to remember? Keep practicing until conscious breathing is as much a part of you as brushing your teeth or combing your hair or eating breakfast. When deep breathing becomes a habit, it will be there for us when we need it the most. Many blessings to you on your journey.
