Heaven and Hell

When it comes to the subject of rebirth I am an unabashed literalist. I really do believe that there are heaven and hell realms that one it’s born into after death as a result of one’s actions here. So why is it that I can at times be so willingto these myself into the gaping maw of Hell?

There are times when I feel as if unskillful actions would be nigh unto impossible for me to commit and others when every thought seems to bring me closer to hellfire. This morning I found myself literally failing out to the devata for help and protection as I felt incapable of fending for myself. Frankly I don’t know what to do in these cases except for to wait it out if I have the strength. Fortunately today I did but I fear that one day I will be dragged to the abyss by these kilesas.

The existence of heaven and hell can be felt even now as we live in the present world. eg feeling hell when angry and heaven when happy or in the state of equanimity. It is here and now which is important and the after life sequel will take place as it will be in the future; the next second, minute, hour is already the future, as future doesn’t need to be accounted in years.
As human being, we will not be spared of Dukkha, but we are too not abandoned without methods to overcome it. When one is feeling to be or nearing to be in hell, perhaps one could exercise awareness, calm the mind, note the negative feeling and change our thoughts, saying this is the state of my mind now, it will pass, as all are impermanent. After which, with a calm mind, move on by noting, understanding the situation, analyze, conclude, and take steps to overcome it.
One’s mind can be trained through meditation, and to assist the mind into meditative states, one could practice and have the noble eightfold paths in our daily life.
