Opening Aspiration — The Great Vow

Bodhiñca ahaṃ patthetvā, sabbasattānaṃ hitāya ca viharāmi.
Aspiring to enlightenment, I vow to live for the benefit of all beings.

Anantānaṃ sattānaṃ vimuttiṃ nāyaka bhavissāmi.
I vow to lead countless beings to liberation.


The Sixteen Precepts with Ten Grave Vows Integrated

1. Sabbapāpassa akaraṇāya veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
I undertake the training to refrain from all evil.

2. Kusalassa upasampadāya veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
I undertake the training to cultivate every wholesome quality.

3. Sacittapariyodapanāya veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
I undertake the training to purify my mind for the welfare of all beings.

4. Pānātipātā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from killing and harming living beings.
I vow not to kill.
(With compassion, I vow to protect all life.)

5. Adinnādānā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from taking what is not given.
*I vow not to take what is not given.
(I vow to cultivate generosity and respect the belongings of all beings.)

6. Kāmesu micchācārā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual misconduct and excessive sensuality.
I vow not to misuse sexuality.
(I vow to use sexuality with wisdom, compassion, and integrity.)

7. Musāvādā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from false and harmful speech.
I vow to refrain from false speech.
(I vow to speak truthfully and wisely, building trust and harmony.)

8. Pisuna vācā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from divisive speech and backbiting.
*I vow not to slander.
(I vow to use speech that unites, never dividing others.)

9. Pharusa vācā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from harsh or abusive speech.
I vow not to praise myself at the expense of others.
(I vow to speak gently, with humility and care.)

10. Samphappalāpa veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from idle, meaningless, or self-centered talk.
(I vow to speak only what is true, helpful, and timely.)

11. Surā-meraya-majja-pamādatṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicants that cloud the mind.
*I vow to refrain from intoxicants.
(I vow to protect mindfulness and cultivate clear awareness.)

12. Micchājīva veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from wrong livelihood.
*I vow not to be avaricious.
(I vow to earn my living in a way that causes no harm and benefits all beings.)

13. Byāpāda veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to refrain from hatred, ill will, or wishing harm.
*I vow not to harbor ill will.
(I vow to radiate kindness, even toward those who hurt me.)

14. Sabba sattesu mettā-sahagatena cetasā viharana sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to dwell with a heart filled with loving-kindness toward all beings.
(I vow to treat all beings as my family, and extend joy and peace to all corners of the world.)

15. Yāvajīvaṃ ahaṃ ratanattayaṃ na niggahissāmi; tatheva taṃ samādarena garukāraṃ karissāmīti sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept not to revile the Three Treasures (Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha) but to cherish and uphold them.
(I vow to trust, study, and serve the path with gratitude and awe.)

16. Karuṇopāya-kosalla-pariggahitānaṃ dasapāramīnaṃ paripūraṇa sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi
I undertake the precept to perfect the Ten Pāramīs (Perfections) with compassion and skillful means.
(These include generosity, virtue, renunciation, wisdom, energy, patience, truth, determination, loving-kindness, and equanimity.)


Closing Aspiration – The Bodhisattva Vow

Imehi sikkhāpadehi cittaṃ pasādetvā, anuttaraṃ sammāsambodhiṃ patthetvā, sabbasattānaṃ hitāya viharāmi.
With these precepts, I purify my heart, aspire to supreme enlightenment, and dedicate my life to the liberation of all beings.

Anantā sattā pāramiṃ pāpetvā, nibbutiṃ pāpessāmi.
May I bring beings to perfection and guide them to the peace of Nirvana.


Contemplation of the Bodhisattvas

Avalokiteśvaro Mahāsatto — He Who Hears the Cries of the World

Karmic Event:
Avalokiteśvara once vowed, “If ever I shrink from my vow to liberate all beings, may my body shatter into a thousand pieces.” At one point, overwhelmed by the suffering of saṃsāra, he faltered—and his body broke apart. Through the compassionate blessing of Amitābha Buddha, he re-formed with eleven heads and a thousand arms to better hear and help all beings.

Pāli Reflection:
Avalokitesvaro bodhisatto sabbasattānaṃ dukkhaṃ disvā anukampaṃ akatvā kāyaṃ bhinditvā punarāgataṃ karuṇāya samannāgataṃ akāsi.

Pāli Prayer:

English Translation:
Embodiment of boundless mercy, refuge in this world of sorrow,
Teach me the ways of compassion, and do not let me stray from the path.


Kṣitigarbho Mahāsatto — Earth Store, Guardian of the Helpless

1. Core Mantra (East Asian Tantric Form)

Sanskrit (Esoteric Form):
ॐ ह ह ह विघ्नं विनाशय स्वाहा
Om Ha Ha Ha Vighnam Vināśaya Svāhā
(Also liturgically recited as: Om Ha Ha Ha Wei La Sa Ba Ha)

Korean Romanized (Jogye):
옴 하 하 하 위 라 사바하
(Om Ha Ha Ha Wi Ra Sabaha)

Purpose:
To remove obstacles and invoke Kṣitigarbha’s fearless and protective power.

2. Name Dharani (Mahāsattva Invocation)

Romanized Sino-Sanskrit:
Namo Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva Mahāsattva
(Na Mo Di Zang Pu Sa Mo He Sa)

Korean:
나무 지장 보살 마하살
(Namu Jijang Bosal Maha Sal)

Purpose:
Homage to the Great Being Kṣitigarbha who vows not to attain Buddhahood until all hells are emptied.

3. Heart Mantra (Tibetan Lineage)Sanskrit:
ॐ क्षितिगर्भाय नमः
Om Kṣitigarbhāya NamaḥPurpose:
Simple homage, calling to mind Kṣitigarbha with devotion and reverence.

4. Tibetan Extended MantraSanskrit:
ॐ अह क्षितिगर्भ थालेंग हूँ
Om Ah Kṣitigarbha Thaleng Hūṁ

Tibetan Romanization:
Om Ah Kshitigarbha Taleng Hung

Purpose:
To receive guidance and support from Kṣitigarbha through karmic difficulty and death transitions.

5. Generosity Invocation Mantra

Sanskrit:
ॐ प्र मणि दान स्वाहा
Om Pra Maṇi Dāna Svāhā

Purpose:
Invokes Kṣitigarbha’s power of merit transfer, karmic purification, and giving.

6. Devotional Name Repetition

Korean (Jogye):
지장보살, 지장보살, 지장보살…
(Jijang Bosal, Jijang Bosal, Jijang Bosal…)

Purpose:
Repetition of the name to generate merit, maintain faith, and invoke his unwavering vow-power.

Closing Dedication (Pāli Prayer):
Niraye ca manussesu, duggatesu bhavesu ca,
Sabbakālaṃ mama nātho, maggaṃ dassesi sabbadā.
Kappānaṃ anantānaṃ, tiṭṭhanto me parāyaṇo,
Jijang nātho maṃ rakkhatu, yāva bodhiṃ anuttaraṃ.

English Translation:
In hells, among humans, in realms of pain and sorrow,
Be ever my refuge, always showing me the path.
Through endless kalpas may you remain my steadfast guide,
O Jijang Nātha, protect me until supreme awakening is won.


Mettayyo Bodhisatto — Maitreya, the Friend of the World

Karmic Event:
In a past life, the Bodhisattva Metteyya gave away both of his eyes to a blind beggar without hesitation. When asked why he did not hesitate to make such a gift, he replied:
“Because I wish for all beings to see clearly. May this giving become the cause of perfect Buddhahood.”

Pāli Reflection:
Mettayyo bodhisatto Tusita-devaloke nibbatti, mettāya ca dānena uttamaṃ kammaṃ akāsīti.

Mantras:

  • Sanskrit: ॐ मैत्रेयाय स्वाहा Oṁ Maitri Maha Maitri Maitreya Svāhā
  • Korean (Jogye): 옴 미륵 미륵 마하 미륵 미미훔 (Om Mireuk Mireuk Maha Mireuk Mimi Hum)

Pāli Prayer:
Mettaṃ bhajanto sabbattha, averaṃ karuṇānugo,
Tusitāya upapanno, Metteyyaṃ dhammaṃ sāvayī.

English Translation:
Loving, free from hatred, moved by mercy,
May I be reborn in Tusita to hear the Dharma from Metteyya himself.


Amitābho Bhagavā — The Buddha of Infinite Light and Life

Karmic Event:
As the monk Dharmākara, Amitābha made forty-eight vows before the Buddha Lokeśvararāja. Most poignant was this:
“If, when I attain Buddhahood, any being who sincerely calls my name is not born in my Pure Land, may I not realize supreme awakening.”
Through aeons of muditā, cāga, and adhiṭṭhāna, he created the Pure Land of Sukhāvatī.

Pāli Reflection:
Amitābho bhagavā pubbe Dhammākaro bhikkhu hutvā sabbasattānaṃ hitāya sukhāvatiṃ nibbattetvā sambodhiṃ patto.

  • Sanskrit: Oṁ Amideva Hrīḥ

Dīghāyuko padīpova, dasasu disāsu jotako,
Amitābha, mama maggaṃ, ālokehi yāva nibbānaṃ.
Tava mahāpaṇidhānena, Sukhāvatīyaṃ nibbattissaṃ,
Tatrāhaṃ tuyhaṃ santike, bodhisattānaṃ guṇaṃ sikkhissāmi.
Bhavesu anantāsu caranto, anuttaraṃ sambodhiṃ pāpuṇeyyaṃ.

English Translation:
Long-lived lamp of light, shining in all ten directions,
O Amitābha, illuminate my path until I reach perfect peace.
O Lord of Sukhāvatī, by the power of your great vows,
May I be reborn in your presence,
To learn the hidden way of the Bodhisattvas,
And journey on through countless lives,
Until I attain Supreme and Complete Awakening.

Paññāpuññapaṭidāna — Verses of Sharing Merit

Yaṃ puññaṃ pasutaṃ mayhaṃ, sabbaṃ saṅkaccikaṃ idaṃ
Whatever merit I have gathered, all of it without exception,
Verīsu vā anatthikesu, sabbesu bhāgaṃ dāmi taṃ.
I give it freely to my enemies, the indifferent, and to all beings.

Tīsu bhave vinipāte, manusse devaloke ca,
In the three worlds, in realms of woe, in human and celestial realms,
Antarābhave loke, sattā sabbe labhantu taṃ.
In the intermediate state as well—may all beings receive this merit.

Duggatiṃ vajantu sabbe, sukhitaṃ gacchantu suggatiṃ,
May all avoid the paths of woe and attain blissful rebirths,
Paññāya parisujjhantu, nibbānaṃ pāpuṇantu te.
May they be purified by wisdom and reach the final liberation.

Ye me manopadosena, vihiṃsitā atikkamiṃsu vā,
Those who, through anger or delusion, have harmed or wronged me—
Manasā kāyena vācāya, khamantu mama aparādhaṃ.
By mind, by body, or by speech—may they forgive my offenses.

Ye ca mayā manasā vācā, kāyena vihiṃsitā idha,
And those whom I myself have harmed through thought, speech, or deed—
Khamantu me anukampaṃ, upādāya dayāyutā.
May they forgive me, with hearts of compassion and kindness.

Ahaṃpi taṃ puññaphalaṃ, buddhatthāya bhāvemahaṃ,
I too direct the fruit of this merit toward the goal of Buddhahood,
Yattha jāyethaṃ bhave, satthāraṃ sāsanānugaṃ.
May I be reborn in places where the Buddha’s teaching still flourishes.

Samaṇānaṃ mahāñāṇaṃ, sāvake sīlasampade,
Among noble monks and wise disciples, endowed with perfect virtue,
Jātim pi dullabhe laddhā, sabbasattahitāya me.
Gaining this rare human birth, may I work for the welfare of all beings.

Sattānaṃ pāraṃ icchantānaṃ, setu bhaveyyaṃ sukhāvahaṃ,
For those who long to cross to peace, may I become a raft to cross to the other side.

Taṇhāya ḍayhamānesu, sītodaka-nadī bhaveyyaṃ parisuddhā,
For those who burn with thirst and want, may I become a cool, clear stream of limpid water.

Pipāsāya kilamantesu, ātapapaṭighaṃ chattaṃ bhaveyyaṃ,
For those worn down by craving’s heat, may I become a parasol.

Dukkhe patiṭṭhaṃ nissitesu, thambha bhaveyyaṃ dullabho,
For those who stagger through their grief, may I become a rare, firm pillar.

Sabbe dukkhā pavāheyyuṃ, mayhaṃ kāyena cetasā,
May I take into my self all of their suffering and causes of suffering,
Puññaṃ ca puññakārā ca, sabbaṃ dammi anussayaṃ.
And give to them all goodness, merit, and the causes of merit.

Buddhatthāya viriyena, sabbasattahitāya ca,
With vigor unceasing, for the sake of awakening, may I labor for the good of all beings.

Dukkhesu vā upakkamesu, na kampetha hadayaṃ mama,
In hardship or distress, may my heart never waver.

Sīlena paññāya viriyena, buddhatthāya patiṭṭhito.
Anchored in virtue, wisdom, and tireless energy, may I persevere on the path to Supreme Buddhahood for the sake of all that lives.
